Dahlia Tuber Care

When and Where to Plant

Dahlias do best being planted when all danger of frost has passed. Dahlias do not like the frost. They also really prefer for the the ground (or pot) to be warmer, like at least 60 degrees. If you plan to plant in a pot, you want at least a 5 gallon pot or bigger. Dahlia tubers tend to rot if they get too cold or too wet.

As far as a planting location, Dahlias really do best in well draining soil with full sun. If you experience hot summers where you live, Dahlias can tolerate some shade.

Planting and Care

Plant tubers 3-6 inches deep. When planting add a support stake, so that you do not accidentally damage the tuber by placing one later. Dahlias can get top heavy which is why having a support stake can be helpful.

Once tubers are planted, hold off on watering until you see a sprout emerge above the soil. When that happens, you can start watering. Dahlias do like to be watered fairly frequently, but they also do not like to be soggy.

Happy Planting!
